Premier faculty to speak at IJCAHPO Technician & Nurses ProgramĀ 

The International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO) and ASCRS will present the annual Technicians & Nurses Program. This 2.5-day event held Friday through Sunday, April 25–27, offers ophthalmic professionals the latest developments in clinical care, surgical techniques, and emerging technologies. Attendees will gain valuable insights from leading experts to enhance their practice.

ā€œOphthalmology faces numerous challenges related to retina diseases and treatments that impacts our patients due to the workforce shortage of ophthalmologists and eyecare teams. It is critical that our technicians increase their knowledge and skills on retinal vascular diseases and infections as well as recent advancements in retinal imaging that will help them increase their efficiency and productivity to deliver the best patient care possible,ā€ said Michael Stewart, MD, IJCAHPO President. To address these important topics, Dr. Stewart and Dirk-Uwe Bartsch, PhD, will share their expertise and tips for technicians and nurses in their patient care. 

Glaucoma specialist Jo Ann Giaconi, MD, will delve into crucial topics such as ocular surface disease, offering valuable insights into its impact on glaucoma management. Additionally, Keith Baratz, MD, will explore the complexities of Fuchs corneal dystrophy, shedding light on the breakthroughs in diagnosis and treatment.

The program will feature important surgical topics. Robin Vann, MD, will discuss refractive cataract surgery and advanced biometry, while S. Akbar Hasan, MD, will update attendees on the innovations in refractive surgery. Derek DelMonte, MD, and Karl Stonecipher, MD, will present ā€œCrosslinking for Ectasia and Visual Rehabilitationā€; David Hardten, MD, FACS, will cover ā€œThe ICL and Phakic IOLs for High Myopiaā€; and Jonathan Rubenstein, MD, will provide insights on ā€œSurgical Management of Astigmatism.ā€ Sumitra Khandelwal, MD, will lead a session on ā€œCornea Lumps, Bumps, and Bruises.ā€ For those working in ASCs, Elethia Dean, RN, BSN, MBA, PhD, will focus on ā€œInvestigating Surgical Site Infections.ā€

Sara Esau, COA, CPSS, will present ā€œSmart Scribing: Becoming Irreplaceable Without AI.ā€ Mary Pat Johnson, COMT, CPC, COE, CPMA, will provide updates on new techniques and trends for 2025.

All sessions are approved for IJCAHPO CE credits, with select courses offering CA BRN credits. A maximum of 15 CE credits can be earned over the course of the event. Joint registration is available for those interested in attending both the ASOA and Technicians & Nurses Programs.
