Programs in 2026 for technicians and nurses

Beginning on Friday, April 10, the International Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (IJCAHPO) and ASCRS will present its annual Technicians & Nurses Program. This 2.5-day event for nurses and ophthalmic technicians will take place Friday, April 10 through Sunday, April 12, and will provide an excellent opportunity to stay current with industry trends and refine clinical and surgical skills.

World-renowned ophthalmology leaders will present the latest developments in clinical care, surgical techniques, and emerging technologies. These experts will share valuable insights and resources to enhance practices in the 15 courses in the clinical track.

“Our eyecare teams must keep updated on the innovative treatments and surgical technologies that create advancement and shifts in our profession. With the constantly changing ophthalmology environment, we face challenges in advocacy, billing and coding, patient care access and disease, and emerging technologies such as AI,” said Richard Allen, MD, PhD, IJCAHPO President. “Improving the knowledge and skills on recent advancements is critical to increasing our staffs’ efficiency and productivity and to delivering the best patient care possible.”

Back by popular demand on the clinical track are courses on training technicians by Taylor Hardin, COT, and the Ophthalmic Master Trainer’s Toolkit by Christine McDonald, COA, COE, ROUB, CRT, and Craig Simms, MEd, COMT, ROUB, CDOS, CRT.

Additional clinical topics include practice management, coding, and documentation, including Incorporating Lean Management: Using Time Study Data to Improve Efficiency, presented by Laurie Brown, MBA, COMT, COE, CPC, CPMA, and Elizabeth Monroe, MA, COE, CPSS, PHR. Mary Pat Johnson, COMT, CPC, COE, CPMA, will present the 2026 Coding Update, and Kirk Mack, COMT, CPC, COE, CPMA, together with Brittney Irwin, COT, CEP, CPC, will discuss performing quality documentation.

The clinical track also highlights important skills such as conducting eye examinations, triage, screening, topography and tomography, ultrasound, and diagnosing diseases, such as keratoconus and glaucoma. 

All sessions are approved for IJCAHPO CE credits, with select courses offering CA BRN credits. A maximum of 15 CE credits can be earned over the course of the event. Joint registration is available for those interested in attending both the ASOA and Technicians & Nurses programs.
